Gettin' Dirty at the Tri-Loppet

A bunch of us got together on Saturday morning to run the 4th Annual City of Lakes Tri-loppet. It's a summer event hosted by the local nordic ski club, and is run like a off-road triathlon, with paddling replacing swimming.

I also put together a photo montage of the MNOCers that did the event. (All photos are from the gallery at Skinnyski).

Wild Summer Race Video

Here's the promised summer race video. I did a little more with the soundtrack than in previous videos, as I'm slowly learning the ropes in Soundtrack Pro. This is also the first time I've done a video that includes original music, in addition to the stock clips; and the first use of an animation, showing the control locations on the bike loop.

Earthscenes I

I'm a curious fellow. Over the years, I've spent a lot of time using Google Earth, to look at anything or everything on the planet. Along the way, I've noticed how surprisingly beautiful and complex those aerial and satellite images are - even in places with sparse human habitation - everything from the false-color splashes of Landsat images to the subtle grays and browns of aerial reconnaisance photos. As time went on, I started to placemark some of the more interesting ones. Every image could be considered a work of art, and in my opinion, some are more interesting and evocative than things I've seen hanging on museum walls.

So I present a first introduction, paired with music by one of favorites from the 18th century. It's titled with latitude-longitude so you can find the images for yourself.

Pete Meets Bear

Don't you want to just hug him?

I've been a little quiet on the online front lately. Annie was in town from Saturday through Thursday before her big move to Hawai'i, and we spent Sunday and Monday canoeing down the St. Croix from Rush City, camping at one of the canoe sites on Sunday night. On the way down, we surprised a large animal on the west side of the river, and based on the noises it made back as it fled into the woods, it was probably a black bear. So I guess it's appropriate to follow up on my previous post and talk about my bear encounters!

First Storm of the Season

This has been a dry spring and early summer, as we all know. But this evening around 9:30 PM a line of thunderstorms formed over southern Dakota county and then trained for about an hour and a half. I saw the lightning to the south on the way back home and headed over to the bluff at Linwood Park with the camera. It turned out to be a great view, and more and more people started to arrive and watch the show.

Wild Summer Race

I shot some video today at the Wild Summer race. The weather was perfect - a sunny, 80 degree at William O'Brien State Park and surrounding areas. The race format was interesting - there were three basic loops, one for each of the three major disciplines: trekking, biking, and paddling. Teams could choose to do the loops in any order, and had to come back to the central location and check in before going out on the next loop. Each loop had a separate set of maps and passport that the racers would pick up at the time they left.

Wild Spring 12 hour Teaser Video

Just for completeness... this is the teaser video for the Wild Spring 12 hour on May 10, 2009. It's an edited version of the long video, but with a little more of the rapid scene-to-scene cuts that seems to be so popular in TV and movies these days. It's posted on Youtube and embedded on the Wild Adventure Race site - but this version is higher resolution.

MIX Race Report - Part III

Part II of the MIX race report ended with a paddle down the Manistee River, ready to go into a nighttime trekking section before we'd see our support crew again.
