Rain

September 2007 (written 1992)

I really like this one, and how it doesn't need a whole lot of singing. I originally wrote this song sixteen years ago when I was living in an apartment above the Espresso Royale cafe in Dinkytown. It was a complete improvisation directly to four-track, and I never re-recorded any tracks after I'd laid them down. This version is a faithful reproduction of the original structure and words, but with doubled guitar tracks and some added background vocals. And finally - it's not about anyone in particular. even at the time I wrote it.

It was a rainy day
The rain beat on the windowpanes
The rain came down
And the lightning stabbed
And the thunder the thunder crashed
And I said no
And you asked me why
Why I said no
The rain came down
The rain clouded our thoughts
Shook us awake
And the thunder crashed
Shook our foundations
You asked why
You asked me why with angry eyes
And I said I don't know
It's just one of those things
That's all I could say

I remember talking, laughing, loving
I remember everything

It was a rainy day
A veil hung over everything
The rain came down
The thunder shook the ground
You looked at me with angry eyes
When I said no, the thunder crashed
The wind whistled
The rain covered us over
I made the mistake
There is nothing I could do
You left me hang
And the rain covered everything
I'm sorry

I remember talking, laughing, loving
I remember everything

It was a rainy day
I remember talking
It's just one of those things
Something came between us
With the rain
The sky was dark
And the thunder crashed
Angry eyes
It shook us all
Shook us all
I wondered who I was
I had no answers

I remember talking, laughing, loving
I remember everything
